Montreal’s Defund Fest: rethinking sex work and repression

local514 | September 28, 2025

The fourth edition of the Defund La Police Festival took place on September 21, 2025, at the École de Danse et Culture Chinoise in Montréal, after political pressure from Projet Montréal forced a relocation from Sun-Yat-Sen Park. Nearly 100 participants gathered to discuss policing, housing, and sex work, marking the third anniversary of Ronny Kay’s death at the hands of the SPVM. A panel with Stella, l’amie de Maimie explored how criminalization, stigma, and language shape sex work narratives—and how decriminalization is vital to true community safety.
