New year, new skills!

Mark your calendars every Tuesdays, from 4-6pm to develop your journalism skills and get hands-on experience in media production.

On January 20 and 27, join CUTV’s Vincent Stephen-Ong for a two-part workshop on video editing using DaVinci Resolve. The first session will introduce the software and cover essential editing techniques, including importing footage, cutting and trimming clips, adding background music and transitions, and exporting your first video.

The second session will build on these fundamentals with hands-on practice, studio workflows, and guided exercises designed to help you refine your editing skills and gain confidence working on real projects. On February 3, join CUTV’s Anthony Jean-Louis for a hands-on audio workshop focused on lavalier microphones, with an additional segment on boom microphones. Learn how different microphone types perform in various settings and fabrics, how to properly connect them to cameras, and practical techniques for reducing noise to capture clean, professional-quality sound.

On February 10, sharpen your interview skills with Local 514 host Kalden Dhatsenpa. Learn how to craft compelling questions, practice active listening, and take effective notes to confidently draw out thoughtful, authentic responses from your interviewees.

On February 17, get behind the camera in a hands-on Sony FX30 workshop led by CUTV Equipment Coordinator Nicholas Dundorf. Learn cinematic shooting techniques and practical camera skills you can immediately apply to elevate your next media project. (This camera is available to rent at the station.)

On February 24, dive into Open Source Intelligence (OSINT) research for journalists. This hands-on workshop explores ethical sourcing, verification techniques, and powerful tools used in investigative reporting. This will be perfect for strengthening your research skills and storytelling credibility.

On March 3, level up your visuals in a workshop on colour correction and colour grading using DaVinci Resolve with Ahmed Sobhy. From colour balance to LUTs, you’ll learn how to enhance your footage and give your videos a polished, professional finish.
