Housing & Homelessness: How Montreal’s housing crisis leaves people on the streets

The homeless population has roughly doubled in Montreal since March 2020. With shelters forced to run at half capacity, combined with recent COVID-19 outbreaks in shelters and the closure of two of Montreal’s tent cities – how can the unhoused stay warm and safe during the winter months? The situation is aggravated by the housing crisis, as “renovictions”, growing vacancy rates and rising housing prices creates barriers in many being able to access affordable housing.
