Montreal’s Defund Fest: the limits of body cameras

local514 | September 30, 2025

At the Defund La Police Festival on September 21, 2025, a panel titled after La caméra d’intervention brought together author Alec Karakatsanis, artist and advocate Ricardo Lamour, and moderator Ted Rutland to discuss the rise of police body cameras. The speakers challenged the idea that cameras ensure accountability, arguing instead that they expand surveillance and bureaucratic control. They warned that footage often serves police interests, reinforcing inequality and repression rather than addressing systemic violence or protecting vulnerable communities.
