Montreal’s Defund Fest: archival research on policing and sex work

local514 | October 1, 2025

The fourth edition of the Defund La Police Festival took place on September 21, 2025, at Montréal’s École de Danse et Culture Chinoise, after political interference forced organizers to relocate from Sun-Yat-Sen Park. The closing panel, Nous Sommes Toujours Là, featured Alex Tigchelaar, Wawa Li, and Sinéad O’Halloran, who presented research on policing in the Quartiers des Rouges. Drawing from archives, they exposed enduring patterns of violence, overpolicing, and stigma against sex workers and racialized communities, linking past injustices to contemporary forms of repression.
