
We are seeking a part-time video journalist to join our team and contribute to the production of original, community-centred journalism. The role is ideal for an early-career journalist or media-maker interested in video reporting. The video journalist will report to the Local 514 journalism team and the CUTV operations team.
This position is funded by the Local Journalism Initiative. The content that the applicant produces must be in line with the LJI’s mandate. The journalist is expected to cover LOCAL CIVICS.
Responsibilities:
- Produce and edit video content for Local 514 that respects the LJI mandate
- Collaborate with journalists, volunteers, and CUTV to complete assignments while respecting deadlines
- Participate in coverage of live events, protests, and community actions as relevant
- Support administrative operations of Local 514
- Conduct research, interviews, and field reporting
- Contribute to editorial direction and develop story pitches
- Assist with volunteer coordination
Key assets:
- Strong interest in community-based, grassroots, or social justice journalism
- Basic camera operation and audio recording skills
- Comfortable appearing on-camera
- Ability to work both independently and collaboratively
- Self-motivated and proactive approach to work
- Basic to intermediate experience with video production and editing software (e.g., DaVinci Resolve, Adobe Premiere, Canva)
- Strong written and verbal communication skills
- Experience covering protests, social movements, or community organizing
- Familiarity with Montreal’s solidarity and grassroots community landscape
This is a part-time position with a two-month onboarding period, after which the candidate will be expected to produce content autonomously on a regular basis.
Wage: $25/hr at 20hrs per week
Workplace:
CUTV is a community TV station based on Concordia University’s downtown campus. We are an independent media organization that focuses on grassroots journalism and covering underreported issues in the Concordia and Montreal community. We also support students and members in creating video content by offering audiovisual equipment loans, studio rentals, and other video production resources.
CUTV’s offices are on the fourth floor and are accessible only via stairs.
